Lizard Lake Wildfire Update

August 13, 2015

The estimated size of the fire is now over 150 hectares. This is only an estimate and they expect the fire to be larger than that. Once they can get a better overview BC Wildfire Service will provide an update.

This is not an interface fire – no homes, communities or structures are anticipated to be impacted by the fire.

Air quality is an issue and we are encouraging everyone to check out the Island Health information regarding protecting ourselves from the small particulates that we perceive as smoke in the air.

Information can be found at http://www.viha.ca/mho/public_health_alerts/wildfires-smoke.htm

There is also an interesting map that shows the smoke trail over western BC at http://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/BSC00WC04/current/

Please feel free to share the information that is provided on our website at http://cvrd.bc.ca/index.aspx?nid=768

August 12, 2015 – 5 pm

BC Wildfire Service continues to aggressively work on this wildfire. It is on Crown Land and moving in a Northwest direction uphill from the Lizard Lake area. Lizard Lake Campground is likely to be closed and anyone planning to go camping in the surrounding area is encouraged to change their plans to another location as this fire is anticipated to continue for quite some time.

NO EVACUATION anticipated for communities surrounding the area!

Ash is falling depending on wind direction and smoke is heavy in the area.

Island Health has been requested to monitor air quality in the area and those with respiratory health concerns are encouraged to check Island Health for advisories on how to minimize potential health impacts.

Capital Regional District and Cowichan Valley Regional District will be actively monitoring the situation and providing updates as they become available.
